The Government’s Cybersecurity Strategy: More Cybersecurity-Certified Companies

The Swedish Government has adopted a national cybersecurity strategy aimed at strengthening resilience to cyber threats and increasing the number of cybersecurity-certified companies in Sweden. As part of this work, the National Cyber Security Centre will begin measuring the number of companies certified according to Cyber Security BASIC and ISO 27001.

Rising expectations for cyber security governance

The national cybersecurity strategy for 2025–2029 outlines how Sweden will strengthen its ability to prevent, detect and respond to cyber threats. Based on both national needs and the EU’s NIS2 Directive, the strategy highlights the need for more systematic cybersecurity efforts in both the public and private sectors.

At he same time the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is being strengthened and given a key role in implementation. One part of this work is to track how many organisations choose to certify their cybersecurity practices.

Cyber Security BASIC – a practical first step

Cyber Security Basic (SSF 1101) is a standard developed by the Swedish Theft Prevention Association. It includes practical, fundamental requirements designed to strengthen cyber security in small and medium-sized organisations.

For many businesses, including suppliers to the public sector and companies in the fire safety and security sectors, Cyber Security Basic is a cost-effective way to demonstrate a structured and preventive approach to cybersecurity. It can also serve as a first step towards more comprehensive standards such as ISO 27001.

SBSC certifies both Cyber Security BASIC and ISO 27001

Certification according to Cyber Security BASIC is based on a digital self-assessment reviewed by independent experts and followed up during the validity period of the certificate.

SBSC also certifies information security management systems according to ISO 27001. Together, these certifications give organisations the opportunity to establish a basic level of protection and, over time, develop a more comprehensive and systematic approach to information security.

A chance to stay ahead

The Government’s new strategy makes one thing clear: cyber security is no longer optional. It is becoming an essential part of being a trusted supplier, partner and employer.

By becoming certified according to Cyber Security BASIC, organisations can:

  • demonstrate compliance with a recognised minimum standard for cybersecurity
  • reduce vulnerability to common cyber threats
  • prepare for future requirements linked to NIS2, procurement and sector-specific regulations

SBSC’s mission is to make the path to certified cyber security as clear and accessible as possible, whether your organisation starts with Cyber Security BASIC or moves directly to ISO 27001.
