Greater focus on the organisation’s environmental context
ISO 14001:2026 sets clearer requirements for organisations to analyse how external factors affect, and are affected by, the organisation from an environmental perspective. This may include climate change, access to natural resources, pollution, biodiversity and ecosystems.
Not all issues are relevant to every organisation, but the organisation must be able to show that an assessment has been made and explain what is relevant.
Clearer connection to stakeholder requirements
The requirements and expectations of customers, authorities and other stakeholders regarding environmental and climate issues must be more clearly integrated into planning and priorities.
This may include requirements related to legislation, permits, climate impact, chemicals, waste and resource efficiency.
Increased focus on the life cycle perspective
The life cycle perspective has been clarified in the new version. Organisations need to consider environmental impact beyond their own operations to a greater extent, for example in purchasing, suppliers, transport and after the delivery of products or services.
The focus is on relevance and reasonableness, not on full life cycle assessments for every organisation.
New requirements for change management
One of the more significant changes in ISO 14001:2026 is the requirement to consider environmental aspects when changes are made in the organisation.
Organisations must be able to show that environmental risks are assessed before changes such as new processes, new technology, changes of suppliers or organisational changes. For many organisations, this can be integrated into existing decision-making or change management processes.
Clarified requirements for supplier management
The standard sets clearer requirements for the management of externally provided products and services. This means that organisations should review which suppliers are important from an environmental perspective and how environmental requirements are followed up where relevant.
Focus on actual environmental performance
ISO 14001:2026 places greater emphasis on the environmental management system leading to real improvements, not only on documented procedures.
This means, among other things, that environmental objectives, follow-up and results need to be actively used in management review and in continuous improvement work.
