Secure doors and locks – make the right choice and prevent burglaries

When you use tested and certified security products, you make life more difficult for burglars and safer for you.

Doors

Security doors are common in multiple-family dwellings and villas. Here are some short facts that you should be aware of regarding these types of doors:

  • Your insurance terms and conditions may refer to “approved security doors”. Security doors are tested in various classes, which means that the door, at a minimum, must belong to class 2 in accordance with the SSF 1078 standard. The RC 3 (may also be referred to as MK 3) alternative according to EN 1627 may apply. In order to satisfy the policy requirements, you may always use a higher class, but never a lower one.
  • An entry door must have an approved lock unit.
  • If you choose a door in accordance with the SSF 1078 standard, it always includes, at a minimum, a certified, approved lock unit. However, if you choose a door in accordance with EN 1627, which is referred to as RC 3/MK 3, and up, you must check whether an approved lock unit is mounted in the door. Alternatively, you can ask the installer to install an approved lock unit in the door. The approved lock unit must, at a minimum, belong to class 3.
  • If you choose to install a security door, no changes may be made on or in the door after it has been installed. In such cases, the certification of the door will namely not apply.
  • A security pin should be mounted on all doors which open outward in order to prevent forcing.

Door locks

By choosing a certified lock, a so-called “approved lock unit”, you reduce the risk that there will be a break-in through your door. With a certified, approved lock unit, you also enjoy, in addition to increased burglar resistance:

  • A lock which has been certified in terms of function and wear and tear;
  • A lock recognised by locksmiths and which can be serviced if necessary;
  • A lock intended for the Nordic climate.

If you choose an electromechanical lock/code lock, there are things to consider. To begin with, you should check the performance for which the lock is certified. There may namely be functions which may not be activated if the lock is to fulfil the requirements of the certificate for approved lock units. Electromagnetic locks/code locks shall also be approved for class 3 in accordance with SSF 3522.
