Locks and fittings

A lock consists of many different parts and, in order to be approved, it is necessary that all components - individually and together - satisfy applicable requirements. However, requirements differ depending on the class in which the lock is categorised.

Approved locks

“Approved lock” refers to the lock unit as a whole. In order to be approved, the entire unit and all component products – together and individually – must meet the requirements of
SSF 3522, class 3. There are seven different types of classes into which lock units are divided according to function, burglar resistant characteristics and method of exit.

All of the requirements are described in greater detail in the SSF 3522 specification – Burglar resistant fixed mounted lock units, classification, requirements and testing.

An approved lock consists of the following:

  • Lock case; either locking cylinder case or lever tumbler lock case. It also covers multipoint locks.
  • Locking cylinder
  • Striking plate
  • Reinforcement plates

Lock cases, cylinders and striking plates can be mechanical or electro-mechanical

The requirements for lock units cover:

  • Strength and performance requirements, e.g. number of locking elements in accordance with the EN standard;
  • Picking and manipulation
  • Manual and/or electronic attack
  • Functional requirements:
    – Intentional handling and indication
    – Authorisation to operate locks from the interior and exterior
    – Direct operation

The requirements are verified by testing and certification.

For certain locks, principally electromechanical locks, there can be limitations in functionality in order to fulfil the requirements for an approved lock unit. In these cases, the lock unit is regarded as certified with certain activated settings.

Classes according to the SSF 3522 standard

  • Class 1A: Lock units for use when the requirement for burglary protection from the door’s outside is lower than the requirements for Class 1B, 2A or 2B and authorised operation from the door’s interior is subordinate to exit/evacuation.
  • Class 1B: Lock units for use when the requirement for burglary protection from the door’s outside is higher than the requirements for Class 1A but still lower than Class 3 and authorised operation from the door’s interior is subordinate to exit/evacuation.
  • Class 2A: Lock units for use when the requirement for burglary protection from the door’s outside is the same as for Class 3 and authorised operation from the door’s interior is subordinate to exit/evacuation. (Example: Residential flats without another entrance.)
  • Class 2B: Lock units for use when the requirement for burglary protection from the door’s outside is the same as for Class 3 and authorised operation from the door’s interior is subordinate to evacuation with the requirement for evacuation fittings classified in accordance with SS-EN 179 or SS-EN 1125. (Example: Doors in public places subject to burglar resistance requirements. Note that it is an exception to an approved lock unit.)
  • Class 3: Lock units for use where the requirement for burglary protection and authorised operation is of more importance than the requirement for fast evacuation. Class 3 constitutes the basic requirement in all protection classes and is the recommended lock also for residential dwellings.
  • Class 4: Lock units for use where the requirement for burglary protection and authorised operation is higher than Class 3.
  • Class 5: Lock units for use where the requirement for burglary protection and authorised operation is higher than Class 4.

What is required for locks with electronic mechanisms?

Electronically manoeuvred locks, lock cases and striking plates are used, for example, in situations in which the door is operated by an access system. These locks and striking plates, and mechatronic cylinders, must fulfil the requirements of SSF 3522 – Burglar resistant fixed mounted lock units in order to be included in an approved lock unit.
