Fire extinguishing systems

There are several types of fire extinguishing systems which are more or less suitable depending on the environment. Below, you will find an introduction to some of them and how they work.

Various types of sprinklers

  • Water sprinklers; sprinkler heads with a glass bulb. Only the sprinkler heads which are exposed to the fire are activated.
  • Water spray or deluge systems. Water flows from all nozzles in the section at the same time.
  • Residential sprinklers; the designation for systems which are specially designed for residential environments.
  • Water mist; a form of water sprinkler in which the water drops are less than 1mm in diameter.

These systems are activated in various ways and generate a variety of water formations when they are used.

Various types of foam systems

There are three different types depending on the extent to which the foam expands.

  • High expansion foam – the liquid expands at least 200 times. Is used to fill the premises with foam.
  • Medium expansion foam – the liquid expands 20-200 times. Is used, for example, for embankments around cisterns.
  • Low expansion foam – the liquid expands up to 20 times. Is used by industry in special applications.

Gas extinguishing systems

Gas extinguishing systems extinguish fire by absorbing heat and reducing the oxygen level. The gases are clean extinguishing media which are suitable for sensitive environments.

Procurement of extinguishing systems

By choosing an extinguishing system from a certified supplier, a user can be assured that the system satisfies the insurance terms and conditions issued by the Swedish Insurance Association in the form of actuarial recommendations. The recommendations are formulated as insurance terms and conditions and set forth the requirements which should be established for approval of various protective technology systems or measures. In certain cases, there are also references to other relevant technical rules and regulations issued by other organisations – e.g. the Swedish Theft Prevention Association and the Swedish Fire Protection Association.

With a certified provider, you will benefit from an extinguishing system which, among other things:

  • meets the requirements of relevant rules and regulations;
  • is commissioning tested upon delivery;
  • is installed by an authorised installation company;
  • is regularly inspected, operated and maintained such that it maintains good functionality;
  • is inspected once per calendar year with not more than 15 months between inspections (any deviations which are detected will be remedied within three months following the date of inspection in the event they are not approved by the insurance company); and
  • will have a current inspection certificate.
